That word: I do not think it means what you think it means.

Among her living-language peers, English tends to live rather large. She's changing all the time, and most of the changes are fun. I love it when books or movies make me think of words in a different ways, but in a few cases, they've completely altered the meanings of common words. Or in the immortal words of Inigo Montoya (of The Princess Bride... has anybody on the planet not seen this movie?): "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Words Regency romances ruined for me

When I read an interesting condition, I always think pregnant.

Similarly, confinement and lying in are polite references to childbirth.

When I read ruined, I always think got laid.

rake is not a garden implement, though he might sometimes be a tool.

Words erotica ruined for me

When I read ejaculated, I think male sexual climax. I never think that the character has spoken loudly or suddenly, and the phrase ejaculated loudly makes me giggle every time. Penises don’t talk.

When I read moist… no, that was a gross word to begin with, even before erotica got hold of it.

Words science fiction also ruined for me

When I read shiny I think Firefly. (I do not consider this ruining, though. Thinking of Firefly makes me happy.)

When I read Noooooo I think Luke.

When I read wired, I used to think (Wired magazine) or (tethered VR) or pre-wireless mice or generally old-school, deprecated tech.

But now I think this:

In a wireless age, plugging in just got sexy again.

Interview with Historical Author Genevieve Jordayne

 Please welcome Historical Romance
Author Genevieve Jordayne!

·      When did you get started writing and what motivated you to write?
o   I started writing little snippets and stories as a child. I was obsessed with books and would read boxes of them (a mix of genres) all summer long that my aunts would loan to me.  I had to take a break from writing for pleasure (aka college) and started writing in earnest about two years ago.

·      What genres do you write in and why?
o   I primarily write historical romance.  Romance makes everything better in life but it’s especially fun to live it through the eyes of someone who wore different clothes, saw different scenery and had different societal expectations.

·      What do you have published and where?
o   I’m a newly published author!  Frontline Angel is a historical romance set in the Philippines during the Japanese invasion of WW2 that tells the story of a young American nurse and her fight for love and survival.  My publisher is BlackRose Writing and available in paperback and ebook at any of the traditional retailers (eg Amazon)

·      Tell me about some of your WIPs?
o   My current project is another standalone but will follow a similar style in that it is set during another war (the American Civil War) and the heroine will have nursing duties.

·      Tell me about yourself?
o   I’m a total book lover as I mentioned. Not only do I love to write books but I love to read and review them.  I also love people so interviews and learning more about what makes people tick is amazing.  I’m also a mom to three little boys, a nurse practitioner, a dog lover and a country girl.

·      Where can we find you on the Internet?

·      What do you like to read? Who are your favorite authors?
o   I love to shake things up but my ultimate favorite books are romance, especially historical.   I also love a good thriller, a murder mystery and I’ve read a lot of classics.  My favorite authors are Julie Garwood, Sue Grafton and J.A. Jance

·      Do you like writing your hero or heroine better? Which POV do you prefer?
o   So far I’ve stuck to the heroine POV but I think as I get more experienced I would love to really dive into a male character

·      What is your perfect hero? Perfect heroine?
o   I love heroines that are smart, hard-working, sassy but also have a vulnerable side.  I like heroes that are good looking, smart and not afraid to work to get the woman they love.

·      Do you belong to any writer’s chapters or groups, like RWA?
o   Black Rose Writing Author Group and Loved Kissed Authors have been my mainstays

·      Do you have any recommendations for aspiring writers?
o   Find an awesome editor.  Editing is the hardest, worst part of the process in my opinion and readers love to find that one error that somehow slipped through despite dozens of rounds of edits.  I swear the computer somehow does that when you turn it off.  I know I didn’t leave that mistake in there, lol!

·      How long did it take you from when you started writing to being published? From first submitting to being published?
o   I actually started researching my first book 7 years about but with birthing and raising my three little spitfires I didn’t actually put ‘pen to paper’ until about two years ago. Then I submitted my work to an author’s site and my publisher contacted me and offered a contract.

·      Do you do research for your stories? If so, what kind?
o   Tons of research.  I read at least a half dozen biographies, autobiographies and non-fiction books about the time period. I also perused lots of websites trying to get more pictures and a sense of what the area looked, felt and smelled like.

·      Are you a plotter (plots and outlines) or a pantser (by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer)? Why?
o   I am a jotter.  I have notebooks that I carry with me everywhere and when a scene comes to me I write it down in steps.  Then when I actually sit down to write I fill in the blanks and add the researched parts to make the scenery believable.

·      Do you use a pen name? Why or why not?
o   I do use a pen name.  My name, Jordayne is a combination of my boys’ names.  I felt it was a more meaningful and intriguing name.

·      Is there a genre that you haven’t written that you would like to?
o   I would love to write a great thriller.  Something with twists and turns that keeps you guessing to the end.  And knowing me there’d still be a touch of romance along the way.

Chapter 2
Lex and I rented a basement suite in North Van from a sweet little old man, named Mr. Marcus. He lived upstairs but he let us have the run of the backyard and for the most part kept to himself.
I’d met Lex four years ago when a guy she was briefly seeing wanted to have a three-some. They picked me up at a bar where I was waitressing and the rest is history. The guy didn’t last long, maybe a few weeks, but Lex and I have been bombing around in each other’s back pockets ever since. The best of friends pretty much since our first kiss.
We were already two drinks in as we dressed in front of the full-length, vintage, oval mirror in my bedroom. Closet full of skanky clothes to go dancing in, the floor was littered with items as I hummed and hawed over what to wear because in all honesty, all I really wanted to do was to put on my PJ’s and binge watch something on Netflix.
Finally, I decided to go with a flowing deep-V turquoise halter dress, which Lex convinced me to rock with my new, just a tad too high, sparkly gold strappy sandals. I left my hair down, brushing it out into soft waves so that curled down to my less than impressive breasts.
Lex on the other hand, with her dark features and voluptuous curves, was looking very doable in a siren red bandaged style, strapless dress and black strappy fuck-me pumps that made her legs go on for ages. She’s only about three inches taller than me but with her heels and naturally mile long legs she appeared to tower over me.
When we showed up to meet our friends at The Fig our outfits earned us a series of whistles and hoots from all of the men, while Chad immediately jumped up from his seat and planted kisses on both Lex’s lips and mine. I watched as Chad’s hand lingered a fraction of a second longer on the small of her back, before he removed it with pained reluctance.
The two have ‘scratched itches’ when they’ve needed to in the past, and the three of us have even messed around on occasion but, based on everything that Lex has said and the way Chad behaves, it’s easy to see they both have real feelings for each other that they just perpetually dance around. Of course, like most things, it has become way more complicated than need be and we all just hang out, while the sexual tension between them continues to build and fester.
I took a seat next to Nisha, another friend, and the two of us quickly immersed ourselves in a conversation about her ever-growing pregnant belly. She and her husband Rakesh were expecting their first child in the early fall.
“And how are your meals this evening folks?”
I jumped as a vaguely familiar voice rumbled behind me. Everyone at our table looked up from their appetizers at the owner of the deep masculine rumble while I craned my neck around and nearly choked on my poached pears and Brie. It was him!
“Everything is great, thanks,” Chad answered, ignorant of who the man, now wearing a dark grey suit and silver tie that brought out the color of his eyes, actually was.
“You!”  Of course, my outburst spurred a series of questioning mumbles around the table, while Lex elbowed me and shifted in her seat to get a better look. I could tell by her gasp that she found him just as irresistible as I did.
“Miss Black, this is a nice surprise. How are you?”
“What are you doing here?” Ignoring his pleasantries, I cut right to the chase.
“Well not only is it a free country and I’m free to go where I choose but, as it happens, I own the place.” The playful smile was back, while dim lamplight caused his mischief-filled eyes to sparkle. “Can I offer your table a round of drinks? And how about a platter of dessert samplers? On the house of course.”
“Thanks, man, that’d be fantastic. Wow!” Chad said, raising his beer glass in a cheers.
“You really don’t have to do that.” Shaking my head emphatically in protest, suddenly flustered and pissed off with myself for feeling that way.
“Shut-up Kenny, let the man give us free booze and food if he wants to.”
“Yes, Kenny, let the man give you free booze and food,” Justin said with a grin. “After all, it’s the least I can do after our session today. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so limber.” He squeezed my shoulder, waved at our table and walked off. Leaving me with a warm tingle where his hand had been and a strong wish that he’d moved it elsewhere, lower.
For the rest of our time at the restaurant I caught myself searching the vicinity for Justin, while my heart did a soft pitter-patter every time I thought I saw his hair or gray suit in the sea of people. But unfortunately, or fortunately, I couldn’t figure out how I felt about it, I didn’t see him again but thanks to his grandiose generosity our table was gifted with a cosmic deluge of sweet delights that left us all in loopy sugar comas. And when I got up to pay my bill the waitress assured me that my whole tab for the evening, all four of my martini’s, my pear and brie crostata and my seared scallops had been comped. Oh Justin Williams, what were you up to?

***
I was feeling pretty good, two Harvey Wallbangers and four extra dirty martinis down the hatch by the time we made our way up the street towards the nightclub. Thanks to Chad’s connections, he works in PR, we jumped the line and waltzed in like celebrities. Lex and I, holding hands, immediately found our way on to the dance floor and started to rip it up, her ponytail flipping around behind her with reckless abandon while my own wavy tendrils kept getting stuck to my freshly re-applied lip gloss. I could feel the sweat building between my B-cup breasts and on the back of my neck but I didn’t care, I was feeling too loose and good and having way too much fun to run to the bathroom and sop it up with a paper-towel.
Chad found us on the dance floor and soon everyone in our little group was bumping and grinding in a friendly circle, waving our hands in the air and laughing hysterically to Paul’s rendition of the giant Q-tip. But before long I felt myself in desperate need of a sit down and some water, the alcohol was catching up on me and the spins were making themselves present in a barrage-style assault. I motioned to Lex that I was going to sit down and she said she’d follow me at the end of the song.
I elbowed and shouldered my way through the crowd, smelling far too many arm-pits and cursing my lack of height, until I found an empty booth occupied only by a ton of papers and folders that quilted the hard granite top. Once my butt hit the plush leather seat it was only seconds before the rest of my body felt the necessity to join it and I leaned back and lay down with only my legs dangling over the end.
“Excuse me, Miss. Are you alright? Would you like me to call you cab?” A smooth, and somewhat familiar voice asked with concern, while from my supine position on the bench I watched dark grey trousers and black dress shoes slide into the booth across from me.
“Noooo, I’m alright. I just need to lie down for a second to stop the spins. Thanks though.”
“Would you like some water?”
“Yeah dude, that’d be great. Thanks.”
He vacated the booth and was back in seconds, followed by another set of legs clad in dark jeans and a pair of black casual loafers. I sat up, closed my eyes from the head rush and grabbed on to the table to stabilize myself. Damn room! Stop spinning! When I opened my eyes there was a bottle of cold water beaded with condensation sitting directly in front of me. Justin was across the booth too, grinning cockily.
“What the hell?” My eyes going wide as I snatched the bottle off the table and chugged it fiercely once I got the lid off.
“Are you stalking me Miss Black?” he asked. Oh, that smile.
“W-what… what? No! Of course not!”
“Well, you came into my restaurant and now you’re at my club, so it would lead one to believe that you might be following me.”
“This is your club? I had no idea.” I sat up and faced him in the booth, smoothing out my dress and fiddling absentmindedly with my hair. I looked from Justin to the tall and dark drink of gorgeousness sitting next to him. “Well, I’m definitely not following you. A friend chose the dinner venue and the club. I’m just along for the ride.”
“I bet you are…” Chuckling softly.
“So, uh… what’s all this?”  Immediately regretting my stupid question, as I swept my hand over all the papers.
Clearly he was doing the ordering or the books for the club, that much was obvious. Me and my stupid drunk rhetoric. God, does he have to be that damn handsome? I think he looks even better than before, especially since he’d ditched the suit jacket and was just sporting a crisp white dress shirt. His hair was tousled and mussed and from my side of the table he still smelled amazing.
“Don’t you have a back office you can do all this in?”
“I’m not here very often so, when I am, I like to be in the midst of it all, like to watch the goings on. Plus, the revenue at this place isn’t as good on Saturdays as it is on Fridays so I’d like to see what’s different and how we can boost sales. I like your dress. You look beautiful.”
His switch from explanation to compliment was jarring. I looked up from where I was twiddling my fingers around the base of the water bottle and caught his eyes. They were penetrating and once again I felt stripped and vulnerable, but this time the feeling was anything but alarming. It was intoxicating and I wanted more. His eyes alone were driving an insatiable urge right to my  core, while my body clenched and ached with need as I imagined those pouty lips traveling along my skin.
“Uh… um, thank you. You… you look nice too.” Why did he have this effect on me? I’m normally far more together and confident than this. I’m a take-charge kind of lady.
“Ha-ha, thanks.” Brushing off my compliment and scooting himself around the booth so that we were sitting next to each other, my body becoming all too aware of the heat radiating off of his large frame and responding in turn with my own raging inferno. My face was probably as pink as a peony. “Miss Black, this is my buddy James. James, Miss Kendra Black. She’s going to whip my ass into shape so I don’t die.”
His dark and dangerous friend stretched up and over the table, extending his big, strong hand. When we shook, it was warm and firm and confident, but when he smiled there was a touch of sadness in his cobalt eyes, along with a vaguely menacing demeanour, that was brooding and somewhat angry.
“Excellent,” James said with a smile, chuckling, deep and low, like how you might expect the devil’s laugh to sound. Running his hands through thick, dark hair that was closely chopped and all tousled like he’d just rolled out of bed having done all kinds of wicked and wild things, he looked back at his friend. “Lord knows you’re a lazy fuck who needs all the help you can get.”
“Lazy?” Justin said with mock indignation. “I’d say I’m anything but lazy, considering that I usually work twelve to eighteen hour days. I just don’t take care of myself, that’s all. But you’re going to change all that, aren’t you Miss Black? You’re going to take care of me.”
His last sentence was laden with innuendo, while the way he called me Miss Black, rolling it around on his tongue like fine wine, made my whole body shiver with need. Even three sheets-to-the-wind on martinis and Wallbangers, I managed to engage in some top-notch maturity and chose not to bite.
“You can call me Kendra; you know?”
            “As you wish, Kendra.”
Well, shit, that was almost worse than when he’d called me Miss Black. The way he said Kendra was like foreplay. I felt my nipples tighten against the built in bra of my halter dress and then watched as his eyes conspicuously traveled down from my face to my chest, and a big smile grew on his lips, he could see them – shit!
“I’m going to head out, man, Nicolette calls,” James said from across the table, bobbing his eyebrows and smiling menacingly.
            “Okay, dude, see you tomorrow.”
“Miss Black, it was really nice to meet you.” And he got up and made his way through the throngs of people to the door.
            “His girlfriend?”
            “His fuck-buddy.”
            “Oh.”
“Hi honey, are you okay?” Lex came up and planted a big wet kiss on my cheek. “Hey you’re the dude from the restaurant. Thanks for the desserts man. That candy apple tart was like an orgasm in my mouth. I’m going to have to try making something like that at the bakery.”
“I’m glad to hear it,” he said smoothly. “And you are?”
“I’m Alexa.” Reaching her arm across my body to shake his hand. “I’m Kendra’s roommate. Hey! Could we get a couple whisky shots over here, please?” she asked a passing waitress.
He quirked one eyebrow in an oddly sexy way and looked down at me. “I didn’t know roommates kissed like that. I saw you guys making out as I left the wellness centre.”
“Ah, well sometimes we’re more than that… when the mood strikes us. Hey!” She elbowed me. “We should ask him to join us sometime… he’s fucking gorgeous.” Oh Lex, always a wizard with words. I took notice of Justin’s body language and he instinctively moved closer to me, his arm coming up to rest behind me on the back of the booth.
“Join you in…” The wicked gleam in those beautiful eyes told me he knew exactly what Lex meant.
“A three-way of course.” And then my best friend erupted into a fit of drunken giggles. “Kendra and I have them all the time. Hey, what about tonight? You want to come home with us and have a little fun?”
“Absolutely!” Justin’s eyes flared with need.
“What? Alexa, shut up!” I snapped, using her full name in frustration.
“Why? You’ve been talking about him non-stop since I picked you up from work, I just thought I’d move things along.” More smirks and raised eyebrows from Justin. He was clearly enjoying watching me suffer like this.
“Is that so? And here I thought you didn’t even like me. But in truth you haven’t been able to stop thinking about me…”
He chuckled, all smiles while the smell of him was driving me ever-loving nuts.  I rolled my eyes and scowled at Lex who motioned for me to move over, and subsequently closer to Justin, so she could sit in the booth too.
“I don’t dislike you.” Oh god I was slurring, damn it! “In fact you seem like a very nice guy, you’re just…uh, not my type.”
            “And what is your type?”
“Oh she says you’re cocky, a play-boy, a guy who knows he’s hot so he plays it up to get what he wants,” Lex chimed in, taking a sip of my water bottle and adjusting the bosom of her dress, while not reading my seriously pissed off vibe at all.
“Well, all those things are true, but that doesn’t mean we couldn’t have a good time.”
His smile was roguish, his eyes challenging as he began gathering up the papers and files that were still spread out all over the table. My eyes all of a sudden fell to his lap and the I’m assuming, impressive package harbouring within his trousers. I licked my lips and crossed my legs squeezing slightly, closing my eyes from the delightful friction.
“Oh, she’s into it.” Lex started to giggle. “Look at her. I think she’s decided to start without us. Come on honey, let’s take this hunk of a man home.”
I opened my eyes to see them both looking at me intently, lust dancing across both of their faces as they simultaneously ran their hands up my thighs. My heart started to beat as though it were trying to escape my chest, while my panties became wet and sloppy. Why was I reacting this way? I’ve had dozens and dozens of threesomes; it’s the only way I have sex with men, why was this one tripping me up? Was it because he was a client? No, I’ve slept with clients before and it wasn’t a big deal. Was I too drunk? No, I’ve been drunker. What was it about this man that ruffled me so? Dear god I was as bad as Lacy.
“Oh, what the hell,” I said, slamming back both the shots of whiskey before the waitress even had a chance to take them off her tray. “Let’s go.”
