Pussy Research -- er, I mean Cat Facts

When I started writing about the Kin, a race of feline humanoids, I began researching cats. Big cats, house cats, kittens, cubs, putty-tats... if it was feline, it was fair game for research. I've included pictures of Kin from my book covers, as well as two from my trailers for Jawk, Tales of the Chosen, and For Women Only. The torso of a Kin is featured on the cover of Surrender Love (Rah Ceeow).
HalfKin (Senth)
Half-human, Half-Kin, All Trouble
Here are ten things about real cats that you might not have known, and then ten about Kin, my feline race.

Feline Domesticus (House Cats)

  1. In ancient Egypt, entire families shaved their eyebrows as a sign of mourning when their cat died.
  2. Purring does not always mean happiness. Purring could mean a cat is in terrible pain such as during childbirth.
  3. Cats step with both left legs, then both right legs when they walk or run. The only other animals to do this are the giraffe and the camel.
  4. A cat's jaws cannot move sideways.
  5. A cat which can roar cannot purr, and vice versa. No cat can do both (but a Kin can).
  6. In ancient Egypt, mummies were made of cats, and embalmed mice were placed with them in their tombs. In one ancient city, over 300,000 cat mummies were found.
  7. Cats have over one hundred vocal sounds, while dogs only have about ten.
  8. A cat cannot see directly under its nose. This is why a cat cannot seem to find tidbits on the floor.
  9. Tylenol and chocolate are both poisonous to cats.
  10. Cats can't taste sweets.
Kin (Mehfawni)
Human (Khyff)

Homo sapiens Cattus  (Kin )
Note: A tradestandard age expresses the equivalent of "human years" to Kin ones.

  1. The word Kin means pride.
  2. Kin use the words male/female rather than man/woman as they consider the latter terms human and therefore beneath them.
  3. In all clans, females engage in a ritual experience of sex at age 17 (22 tradestandard) and are coached by one or more close family members on how to achieve orgasm.
  4. Males are taught from age 15 (19 tradestandard) to provide pleasure to females.
  5. Female Kin consider it their duty to keep single males occupied with sex, as it is generally believed that unclaimed males are dangerously aggressive.
  6. Females are not fertile until age 22 (28 tradestandard), and may partake in sex at their leisure until that time.
  7. The Sanction of Strength, a physical test of hunting prowess is given when a female reaches puberty.
  8. The average male height is 6 feet 8 inches to 6 feet 10 inches (tradestandard).
  9. The penis of a Kin male is generally the same size when flaccid as a human's is when erect.
  10. The average Kin male can perform sexually ten times during a bout of sex.

Pictures from book trailers

Mehfawni Ruh
from For Women Only
All the books set in the Tarthian Empire have either full Kin characters or HalfKin, a mix of human and Kin.
 Jawk Brighton
from Jawk, Tales of the Chosen
Jawk looks completely different on the cover of his book. This image worked on me, and I had to try making him catlike. Check out those eyes! Note that with both characters, the part of the nose between the eyes is wider and flatter than a human's. Think lion/human cross and you have it right.

Off to research some more. I love this job!

The Kin are a wonderful race. Obviously, I'd like to meet them!

Aspirin is also poisonous to Cats.

Thanks for all the feline facts.

Thank you, Savanna. I didn't know about aspirin, so I'm glad you mentioned that. Our roomies have birds so we have no cats here. :( If I ever get to have another pet (someday), I want a cat!
